The Maybach Z223 is not a rebadged S-Class: it has its own body, 5,469 mm overall and 3,396 mm wheelbase, which is 18 centimetres longer than the long-wheelbase S-Class, entirely to the benefit of the rear seats. In Europe, the S 580 opens the Maybach range, below the V12 S 680.
The engine is the M 176 DE 40 AL, 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 503 hp and 700 Nm, paired with a 48 V starter-alternator that provides 15 kW (about 20 hp) and 250 Nm and eliminates the break when restarting the engine. 4MATIC all-wheel drive, 9G-TRONIC gearbox, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 s, limited to 250 km/h, 246 g/km CO2. The AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS+ adaptive damping is standard; rear-axle steering and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL are available as options.
The Maybach work is at the rear. Executive seats are standard, reclining up to 43.5 degrees and upright to 19 degrees for working, with electric leg rest, calf massage, neck and shoulder heating. The chauffeur pack, also standard, tilts the front passenger seat 23 degrees beyond vertical and frees up a footrest: this is what turns the right rear seat into a berth. Thickened laminated glass and enhanced acoustic insulation come with the trim.
The Z223 body is unique to the Mercedes-Maybach, marketed since 2021 and produced in parallel with the S-Class W223, with which it does not share the bodywork.
The tax line is calculated before negotiation, not after. The CO2 penalty due at first French registration follows the scale of the year of first registration: at 246 g/km, a 2022 car is at the ceiling of this scale, i.e. 40,000 euros, reached from 224 g/km. This amount is then reduced by the age-related depreciation in monthly increments of article L. 421-7-2, applicable from 1 March 2025. On the positive side, the capping of article L. 421-74 cancels the weight penalty when the CO2 penalty already reaches its ceiling. Added to this is the regional tax for the certificat d'immatriculation (French registration certificate), set at 60 euros per fiscal horsepower in Centre-Val de Loire for 2026.
For this generation, wear does not affect the V8, which is robust and lightly stressed, but rather the comfort electronics: soft-close doors, central screen, touch controls and driver assistance sensors are where interventions are concentrated. A visit to an approved workshop to close any open manufacturer campaigns on the serial number is the first step after registration.
